Fuse and safety

.

Heat generation in an electrical circuit is directly related to the amperage. The higher the amperage the greater the heat generation. Too high a current leads to too much heat generation, which can cause components in the electrical circuit to malfunction; in the worst case, it can cause a fire. There are fuses that you can replace, but there are also so-called circuit breakers. This is a type of fuse used in electrical installations such as those in your home, for example. Unlike a fuse, it does not need to be replaced after it is triggered. Through a switch, the fuse is immediately functional again. The short-circuit protection is controlled magnetically by an electromagnet, the overload protection is thermally controlled by a bimetal. On this page you will find fuses that you can replace yourself. Whatever type you choose, make sure the specifications such as voltage, current and characteristic are correct. This will ensure proper and safe operation. If you are not sure about your choice, feel free to contact us.

Fuse characteristics; fuse and ceramic fuse

.

In addition to the known specifications such as voltage and maximum current, it is also important to take into account the fuse characteristic. This indicates how long a certain excessive current is possible before the current is interrupted. Let's take the so-called fuse as an example. In the interior of this fuse is a fuse wire that burns out at a specified amperage, thus causing a current interruption. A fuse needs to be replaced after burning out. At Allekabels.nl you can buy the following types of fuses: glass fuses, ceramic fuses and car fuses. With ceramic types, the fuse wire is in a ceramic tube, which has a contact on both sides. The ceramic fuse is as compact as a glass fuse, but the ceramic shell allows the maximum current to be specified much higher. This is more or less a necessity in many electrical circuits.

Glass Fuses

.

With glass fuses, the fuse wire is contained in a small transparent glass tube, which has a contact on both sides. The glass fuse is often used in appliances. Because the glass of the fuse is transparent it is easy to see whether the fuse wire has burned out or not. A glass fuse is placed in the electrical circuit by means of a fuse holder. Glass fuses come in different characteristics from "super fast" to "super slow". Fast types will break the circuit as soon as the specified amperage is reached. Slow versions allow a momentary higher amperage. Depending on sensitivity to peak currents, a faster or slower version will be used in a device. Switch-off times are standardized via IEC 60127. For a current of 10x the rated current, the following typing and tripping times apply: FF=super fast max. 6ms, F=fast max. 20ms, M=normal min. 5ms - max. 90ms, T=slow min. 10ms - max. 300ms, TT=super slow min. 100ms - max. 4s. Always replace a defective model with the same type.

Car fuses and self-healing fuses

.

Car fuses serve to protect the electrical circuits in your car. The most well-known are plug-in fuses. Characteristic here is the transparent plastic shell, which makes it easy to see whether the fuse has blown. Plug fuses are plugged into a fuse box. The location of the fuse box is listed in the instruction booklet of the corresponding car. Plug fuses come in the following types: mini, mini low, normal and maxi. For each type, the maximum current is indicated by a color code. In older cars, ceramic or glass fuses may be used. When replacing them, be sure to follow the car manufacturer's instructions. Where a fuse must be replaced after an overload, this is not necessary for a self-healing fuse. A self-healing model works on a different principle than a fuse. This is because when an overload situation occurs, the circuit is not interrupted, but the internal resistance of the fuse increases very rapidly, greatly limiting the current flow. After the overload situation is remedied, the internal resistance decreases again to the nominal level.

Thermal fuses

Thermal fuses are temperature sensitive and are used to prevent overheating of devices. In particular, the fuse kicks in during prolonged high loads. You may have already experienced that your vacuum cleaner switches itself off temporarily during prolonged use; this does not happen because there is an overload or short circuit but because the device becomes too hot due to prolonged intensive use. Thermal ones are available in two types. Single-use: after triggering the fuse should be replaced. Resettable: if the situation of overheating no longer exists, this fuse will automatically reset itself. This type is also used for automatic temperature control.
