Measuring equipment: the multimeter

.

The multimeter gets its name from the multiple measurement functions it has. Each multimeter can measure the basic quantities of voltage, current and resistance. With both voltage and current, a distinction is made between direct DC (direct current) and alternating AC (alternating current). Multimeters can be purchased in many different price ranges. The price here strongly influences the accuracy and durability of the meter. In addition, a more expensive multimeter often has more features. Meters in the cheap price range do have a DC and AC voltage range, but only a DC current range. If you also want to be able to measure the AC current consumption of a device, make sure you choose a model with the AC current option. In addition to the basic functions described, modern multimeters are often equipped with a number of additional functions. Some of these functions can also be found in cheaper models. So it's worth comparing models that are within your budget. Consider measuring capacitance, frequency, inductance, temperature, diodes (pass test), buzzer for pass test, transistor test for measuring direct current amplification (hFE).

The current clamp

.

The current clamp is measuring equipment that allows you to measure current in a cable without interrupting the cable. These measuring devices use the principle of induction to measure alternating current, the same principle used in the classic wire-wound transformer. A current clamp has two arms that open at the push of a button, making it easy to put around a wire. Once the arms are closed again, the arms function as the magnetic yoke of the current transformer. Through an internal winding, the current through the wire in the yoke can be measured. By using HAL sensor, DC currents can also be measured. The current clamp is especially suitable for measuring large currents and is popular in power technology. When using a current clamp, make sure that you take only one conductor between the legs of the current clamp to measure the current consumption of a device. If you take the entire supply conductor in the pliers, you will measure both the supplied and the returning current which will result in a zero result and you will not measure any current.

Other electrical measuring equipment

.

In addition to measuring voltage, current and resistance, we sell other useful measuring equipment. The cable tester is a device that, depending on the type, allows you to quickly and easily measure through network cables and various types of audio cable. With a voltage detector, you can easily check if there is mains voltage on a socket or other electrical line. A voltage detector takes the form of a screwdriver or pen. The former works via direct contact and does not require a battery. The second works capacitively and needs a battery to function. An energy meter allows you to check the energy consumption of appliances such as your washing machine, but is also suitable as an intermediate meter to measure the consumption of home office or a rented room. The digital frequency counter is a specialized device that allows you to measure the frequency of a signal. You will find this device in the electronics workshop where a lot of work is done with digital and high-frequency equipment. The microwave leak detector is handy measuring equipment to check your microwave oven for dangerous electromagnetic leaks. The lamp tester allows easy testing of lamps. Please note that these testers are only suitable for light bulbs.

Measuring equipment for non-electrical quantities

.

The decibel meter allows you to measure the level of ambient noise. The inexpensive decibel meter is suitable for direct sound measurements. The comprehensive decibel meter has a USB interface to export the measured values to your computer. With a digital thermometer, you can easily monitor the temperature inside and outside your home. The meat thermometer allows you to check if the temperature is high enough while roasting. The infrared thermometer allows you to take non-contact temperature readings. Useful for detecting hot spots in electronics. The anemometer is an instrument for measuring air movement. Not only suitable for measuring how hard it blows outside, but also suitable for measuring the air movement of a fan or an exhaust system. The Ph meter allows you to determine the acidity of a liquid. This instrument is popular with pond and aquarium owners. For measuring distances, you can choose from the tape measure, the measuring wheel and the laser rangefinder. A moisture meter for wood is an indispensable tool for checking whether your building material is sufficiently dry before you start working with it. A moisture meter is also useful for wood stove owners to check if the wood is dry enough to fire.
