What is an AA battery?

This is one of the most widely used formats that is on the market. It consists of one cell and has a connection on both flat sides for the minus and plus pole. Nominal voltage is 1.5 volts. Its round shape makes it easy to insert and remove from a battery holder. You just need to pay attention to the correct polarity. The AA battery is known by a number of names, such as penlite, Mignon, LR-6 (disposable) and HR-6 (rechargeable). The AA battery has become popular with electronics manufacturers because of its small size. It is easy for the manufacturer to incorporate a battery holder in which a number of batteries are connected in series. When connected in series, the output voltages of the batteries are added together. This produces a high enough voltage to power the electronics in a device. When using multiple batteries in one device, be careful not to combine different batteries. Always use a new set of the same kind so that they are used equally.

Disposable and rechargeable

There are different types of batteries. The disposable battery for one-time use and the rechargeable version that can be recharged many times with a suitable charger. A standard disposable AA battery has a nominal voltage of 1.5 volts. The disposable battery has a much higher capacity, so it needs to be replaced with a new one much less often. A disposable battery is for single use and cannot be recharged. When they are empty, they must be replaced with a new battery.... Never throw the empty disposable batteries in the garbage, but put them in the chemical waste. The rechargeable version has a smaller capacity, so it needs to be changed more often. The big advantage is that it can be recharged many times with a suitable charger. A rechargeable product is slightly more expensive to purchase, but is much more economical to use in the long run. The rated voltage of this product is 1.2 volts. This slightly lower than the 1.5 volts of a disposable battery. Many devices have no problem with this, some devices will perform slightly less well. Consider a lower maximum volume, slightly lower light output or, in the case of toys, slightly lower speed.

The lithium battery

This is an outlier. The rated voltage of this is 3 to 3.6 volts, in addition, it is rechargeable. Because of this higher voltage, it cannot be used as a replacement for a standard AA battery. Thus, it should only be used in devices specially suited for it. If you insert one with a nominal voltage of 3-3.6 volts into an ordinary device anyway, it may damage the device. The lithium battery can be overcharged, which can cause it to overheat and, in the worst case, ignite. In addition to the AA lithium battery, there is also the ½ AA lithium battery version. This has half the length of a normal AA battery and is rechargeable. The rated voltage is between 3 and 3.6 volts. Because rechargeable lithium batteries are often permanently mounted in a device, we supply several models that feature two connecting wires. This makes it easy to replace an old soldered cell with a new cell.

AA battery order and use

The first choice you have when ordering an AA battery is between disposable and rechargeable versions. For many consumers such as electric toys, photo and video cameras, investing in rechargeable batteries is a good choice. With rechargeable batteries, you can choose from different capacities. The higher the capacity, the more energy in one charge and the longer the battery will last before you need to recharge it again. With a higher capacity, you often pay a bit more. The capacity of a rechargeable is expressed in milli-ampere hours, or mAh for short. Here, 1000 mAh equals 1 Ah. A 1000 mAh rechargeable battery can deliver 1000 mA (1A) for an hour before it runs out of power. At 500 mA (0.5 A), it is 2 hours. With disposable batteries, the capacity depends on the amount of current drawn. Because a disposable battery is often used over a much longer period of time, aging due to self-discharge also plays a role. For devices that use a bit more power, we recommend choosing Alkaline batteries. These are a bit more expensive, but last a lot longer.
