Kinds of gaming headset

Gaming headsets have front connectors that can be one of three variations:

  • 3.5mm tubular jack plug, mini-jack or latch-plug;
  • 6.3 mm jack plug;
  • a flat rectangular USB connector;
There is also another wireless version in which the base station, the transmitting/receiving station, is connected to the computer with a USB adapter. There are further versions with a microphone with built-in plop filter, to prevent "plopping" when speaking the "p". There are also gaming headsets with microphones that suppress noise with the common Dolby noise reduction system or even have noise cancellation, which largely cancels out ambient noise. Important is the difference in battery life with wireless gaming headsets. It depends on the current, which is determined by how far the volume knob is opened and the impedance value. Good values for gaming headsets are: > 60 Ohm impedance, sensitivity > 90 dB and a max power rating of > 100 mW. Because each manufacturer of gaming consoles, such as Playstation with PS3 and PS4 or Xbox One for example, markets its own gaming headset, we have several models in the range: gaming headset PC, gaming headset PS4, gaming headset Xbox One, gaming headset PS3.

The technology behind the gaming headset

Who thought a gaming headset is nothing more than and headphone with a microphone is wrong. Advanced gaming headsets have DTS (Digital Theatre System) on board. This is a surround sound cinema audio system: a multi-channel system that reproduces audio three-dimensionally for a true surround effect. First heard in 1993 in the feature film Jurassic Park, this system has made its way into living rooms. Not only audio/video equipment is now equipped with it, but also various gaming headsets. Then there is the wireless gaming headset, the wireless gaming headset variety, which runs on batteries and has a transmitter/receiver base station with it. Such a base station is a device usually with a saucer-like shape, into which a sprite antenna sticks. It operates on the well-known license-free 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, on which no broadcasters broadcast or are otherwise in use. In practice, these on-air frequency bands are used exclusively for wireless devices: wireless mice and keyboards, security cameras, smartphones, headphones, etc. Modern gaming headsets have the ability to switch or switch between the two bands with a push or slide switch on the headphones.

Specifications of headsets for gaming

With gaming headsets, the frequency range is specified, which by default is the hearing range of an adult, between 20 Hz (the bass and) and 20 kHz (the treble). A common value for the impedance or alternating current resistance or dynamic resistance of a headphone is usually 32 ohms and of the microphone 2200 ohms. That impedance is a measure of the load capacity of the amplifier on the sound card. A higher resistance is not bad, a lower one is because then more current is drawn, which can damage the headphones or the sound card. Sensitivity says something about the amount of loudness of the headphones. It is expressed in SPL/1 mW or Sound Pressure Level per 1 mW of power, where 1 mW equals 1/1000th of a watt. 90 dB/1 mW gives a sound pressure level of 90 decibels at 1 mW of power, which is a good value for Hi-Fi. The combination of impedance and sensitivity is a measure of the effective sound strength on headphones. Impedance is the amplifier power used and sensitivity is the power converted into sound. The maximum load capacity is the power the headphones can take for an extended period of time without breaking down and is expressed in milliwatts. The higher the value the more loadable.
